MUCEM

Marseille has always been a city defined by movement. Founded by Greek sailors more than two and a half millennia ago, it remains one of the Mediterranean's great crossroads, shaped by trade, migration and cultural exchange. MuCEM was created to explore precisely this history.

Located at the entrance to the Old Port, the museum occupies the former J4 harbour pier and stands beside Fort Saint-Jean, one of Marseille's oldest historic sites. The two are linked by footbridges suspended above the sea, creating one of the most memorable cultural walks in France.

Designed by architect Rudy Ricciotti, the museum's contemporary structure has become an emblem of modern Marseille. Its distinctive lattice façade filters Mediterranean light while maintaining a constant visual connection to the sea beyond. Architecture is not merely a container for the collection; it forms part of the experience itself.

The museum's exhibitions explore the cultures, traditions and histories that connect the countries of the Mediterranean basin. Rather than focusing on a single nation or period, MuCEM examines the shared influences that have shaped the region over centuries.

What distinguishes MuCEM is the relationship between collection and place. Few museums are so closely connected to their setting. From the galleries, terraces and footbridges, visitors remain constantly aware of the sea that inspired the institution's creation.
