Hôtel Le Corbusier

Completed in 1952, the Unité d'Habitation was conceived by Le Corbusier as a new model for collective living. Combining apartments, internal streets, commercial spaces, recreational facilities and communal areas within a single structure, it became one of the most influential architectural projects of the twentieth century and helped define the language of postwar modernism.

The building introduced the extensive use of raw concrete, or béton brut, whose textured surfaces would later inspire the Brutalist movement. It was also the testing ground for Le Corbusier's Modulor system, a proportional framework intended to align architecture more closely with the scale of the human body. Charlotte Perriand contributed to elements of the interior design, including the integrated kitchens that formed part of the original concept.

Today, the building remains remarkably active. Alongside its residential function, it houses Hôtel Le Corbusier, the restaurant Le Ventre de l'Architecte and MAMO, the contemporary art centre created by designer Ora-Ito on the rooftop terrace. In 2016, the Unité d'Habitation was included on UNESCO's World Heritage List as part of a group of Le Corbusier's most significant works.

What distinguishes Hôtel Le Corbusier is that the experience is inseparable from the architecture itself. To stay here is not simply to visit Marseille, but to spend time inside one of the most studied and influential buildings of the modern age.
