Few independent designers embody the spirit of Provence as completely as Jeanne Bayol. Based in Saint Rémy de Provence, she creates clothing inspired by travel, colour and cultural exchange while maintaining production through artisan workshops in nearby Avignon. Yet fashion represents only one part of a broader creative universe that also includes restored Romany caravans, books, interiors and a lifelong fascination with the art of living freely.
Some designers create collections. Jeanne Bayol has created a world.
Trained as a stylist in Paris, she eventually returned to her native Provence in search of a different rhythm of life. What followed was not the conventional path of a fashion brand but a creative journey shaped by travel, flea markets, craftsmanship and an enduring fascination with nomadic culture. Together with her partner Jean-Marie, Bayol spent years restoring historic Romany caravans, travelling across Europe to find original examples and, later, building new ones when authentic models became increasingly rare.
These experiences became the foundation of her aesthetic language. Her clothing reflects what she describes as créations métissées — mixed-influence creations that draw inspiration from different cultures, colours and traditions. Dresses, blouses, skirts and jackets combine a relaxed Provençal sensibility with a spirit of travel and openness. Rather than pursuing trends, the collections express a personal vision shaped by decades of observation, collecting and making.
What distinguishes Jeanne Bayol within contemporary fashion is the coherence of her creative universe. The same sensibility appears in her books, her restored caravans, her home collections and her boutique in Saint Rémy de Provence. Even her annual presentation takes an unconventional form. Instead of a traditional runway show, each collection is introduced through the Défilé des Copines — a friends' fashion show that celebrates community, conviviality and personal connection.
The garments themselves are produced by a workshop of skilled artisans in Avignon, preserving a local manufacturing relationship that has become increasingly rare within fashion.
NOTES includes Jeanne Bayol because she represents something larger than a clothing label: a distinctly Provençal way of creating, collecting and living.
