Borgo Pignano

Borgo Pignano occupies a hilltop position in the Val di Cecina, one of Tuscany's quieter and less celebrated regions. While much attention is given to Chianti and the Val d'Orcia, this landscape of woods, farmland and ancient settlements reveals a different side of Tuscany — one defined less by spectacle than by continuity.

The history of the estate extends back more than 2,500 years. Archaeological evidence points to Etruscan settlement, while the first documented reference to Pignano appears in 1139. At the centre of the estate stands the Romanesque church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, a reminder of the site's medieval significance and its long role within the surrounding countryside.

The estate entered a new chapter in the late seventeenth century when it was acquired by the Incontri family, wealthy Tuscan merchants who transformed the agricultural settlement into a country residence. Their influence remains visible today in the villa and the broader organisation of the estate.

More recently, the property was restored by Sir Michael Moritz and Harriet Heyman, who chose to preserve its agricultural character rather than transform it into a conventional luxury resort. Organic farming remains central to life here, with vineyards, olive groves, gardens and grain fields continuing to shape the landscape. The estate's restaurants draw directly from this production, reinforcing the relationship between hospitality and the land.

What distinguishes Borgo Pignano is its commitment to creativity as well as cultivation. Artist residencies and works associated with the Royal Drawing School sit comfortably alongside agriculture and historic architecture, creating a rare combination of cultural patronage and rural life.
