Centro Pecci

Centro Pecci occupies a unique position within Tuscany. While much of the region’s cultural identity is built around Renaissance art, historic architecture and inherited collections, the centre was created to engage directly with the present. Opened in 1988, it became Italy’s first institution founded specifically to collect, document and exhibit contemporary artistic practice.

Its location in Prato is significant. Long shaped by textile manufacturing and industrial production, the city has often existed in the shadow of nearby Florence. Centro Pecci presents a different narrative: one in which cultural innovation belongs not only to historic capitals but also to working cities adapting to modern realities. The museum’s original building, designed by Italo Gamberini, drew inspiration from the rational language of industrial architecture familiar throughout Prato.

The institution’s most visible transformation came with Maurice Nio’s 2016 expansion, a dramatic intervention that wraps around the earlier structure without replacing it. The dialogue between the two buildings reflects the museum’s wider purpose: connecting contemporary experimentation with existing cultural foundations rather than treating them as opposites.

The collection includes more than a thousand works by leading Italian and international artists and traces major developments in contemporary art from the 1960s onward. Yet Centro Pecci’s importance extends beyond its holdings. It represents Tuscany’s continuing cultural evolution, demonstrating that the region’s contribution to artistic life is not confined to preserving the past but also includes creating space for new ideas.
