Experiencing the Palio di Siena

The Palio di Siena is not a historical reenactment. It is one of the rare traditions in Europe that continues to function much as it has for centuries, preserving a form of civic identity that remains central to everyday life in the city.

The event takes place in Piazza del Campo, Siena's shell-shaped medieval square, where ten of the city's seventeen contrade compete in a bareback horse race run over three laps of the piazza.
