Opened in 1922 inside the Palazzo dello Strozzino, Cinema Odeon occupies a building whose history stretches back to Renaissance Florence. Reimagined in recent years as Giunti Odeon, it continues a century-long cultural role by bringing together cinema, publishing, bookselling and public events within a single historic space.

Cinema Odeon is ultimately a story about cultural adaptation. The venue occupies the Palazzo dello Strozzino, a Renaissance building associated with the Strozzi family and positioned within one of Florence’s most historically significant urban settings. Across centuries, the building has served different purposes while remaining embedded in the city’s civic and cultural life.

Its transformation into a cinema in 1922 introduced a new chapter. Designed by Marcello Piacentini, the venue became one of Florence’s most important film theatres and helped establish cinema as part of the city’s cultural identity. Generations of Florentines experienced the building not as a Renaissance palace but as a place of gathering, entertainment and shared cultural memory.

The institution’s most recent reinvention may be its most interesting. Faced with the challenges confronting historic cinemas across Europe, the venue evolved into Giunti Odeon, combining bookshop, café and cinema within the same space. Rather than preserving the building as a static monument, the project extended its public function into a new era, creating a place where literature, film and conversation coexist.

For NOTES, Cinema Odeon demonstrates how cultural institutions survive through renewal rather than preservation alone. The significance of the venue lies not simply in its architecture or its cinematic history, but in its ability to remain relevant across successive generations of Florentine life. It stands as an example of how historic buildings can continue serving the cultural needs of a city without abandoning their past.
