Set within nearly fifteen hectares of parkland outside Saint Rémy de Provence, Domaine de Chalamon is a historic bastide restored by the Fontenille Collection. Its strongest identity lies in its six gardens, originally shaped by landscape architect Dominique Lafourcade, where cypress, olive trees, boxwood, streams and Provençal stone create one of the Alpilles’ most refined garden stays.

Domaine de Chalamon belongs to a quieter category of Provençal hospitality: the restored estate where landscape carries the meaning of the place. Set just outside Saint Rémy de Provence, the property centres on a historic bastide surrounded by nearly fifteen hectares of southern vegetation, olive groves and six distinct gardens. The official estate description identifies the house as a bastide of nearly 1,700 square metres, surrounded by parkland, cypress, pine, noble laurel, water features and formal boxwood compositions.

The gardens are the estate’s principal cultural asset. Designed decades ago by Dominique Lafourcade, one of the major landscape figures of southern France, they were conceived as a sequence of perspectives rather than simple decoration: cypress allées, lawns, streams, antique-style pilasters, clipped topiary and olive groves arranged to create a rhythm of openness and enclosure.

Inside, Domaine de Chalamon follows a restrained language of Provençal comfort: high ceilings, old stone, natural materials, rattan, artisanal ceramics and soft tones that echo the garden rather than compete with it. The result is not a dramatic hotel but a composed country house where architecture, planting and light create the atmosphere.

For NOTES, Domaine de Chalamon matters because it demonstrates how garden design can define a stay as powerfully as architecture. It is a study in Provençal restraint: a bastide whose real luxury is spatial, botanical and deeply tied to the landscape of the Alpilles.
