Souleiado

Souleiado is one of the rare places where a regional craft tradition can be understood as both history and living practice.

The story begins in Marseille, where brightly printed cottons imported from India reached Provence in the late sixteenth century. Their vivid colours and washable fabrics quickly inspired a local printing industry. The cloth became so desirable—and so threatening to established silk and wool manufacturers—that Louis XIV prohibited its manufacture, sale and use in France in 1686. The ban endured for seventy-four years.

After the restrictions were lifted, Provençal indiennage flourished. The house that became Souleiado was founded in Tarascon in 1806 as Manufacture Jourdan. By the early twentieth century, foreign and industrial competition had eliminated nearly every regional producer. Charles Henri Déméry rescued the remaining manufacture in 1916, and his nephew Charles Déméry created the name Souleiado in 1939—a Provençal word describing the moment sunlight breaks through clouds after rain.

The Hôtel d'Aiminy in Tarascon now brings the complete story together. The boutique presents current clothing, accessories and home textiles; the atelier preserves the techniques and visual language of printed cotton; and the museum holds original carved printing boards, historic fabrics, patchworks and objects representing more than three centuries of Provençal design.

Souleiado has collaborated with figures including Christian Lacroix, Chantal Thomass and Alessandro Michele, yet its significance reaches beyond fashion. It remains a living archive of the patterns, colours and cultural exchanges that shaped the visual identity of Provence.

NOTES includes Souleiado because it does not simply preserve Provençal textile history—it continues to make that history visible, usable and alive.
