Château La Coste is one of the most ambitious cultural projects in contemporary Provence. Combining a working wine estate with a major collection of site-specific art and architecture, it offers a rare example of landscape, creativity and agriculture existing as a single experience.

Notes Review

Situated between Aix-en-Provence and the Luberon, Château La Coste occupies a landscape shaped by vineyards, woodland and ancient stone terraces. Winemaking has taken place here since Roman times, yet the estate's contemporary identity began in 2002 when Patrick McKillen acquired the property and embarked on an ambitious cultural vision.

Rather than creating a conventional sculpture park, McKillen invited artists and architects to respond directly to the landscape. Each participant was encouraged to choose a location within the estate and create a work that respected the character of the site. The result is a four-kilometre trail that unfolds through vineyards, forests and hillsides, connecting architecture, contemporary art and the rhythms of agricultural life.

Today the collection includes works by some of the most significant artists and architects of the past century, among them Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel, Renzo Piano, Richard Serra, Louise Bourgeois, Ai Weiwei and Andy Goldsworthy. Yet the strength of Château La Coste lies not in the names alone, but in the coherence of the whole. Art is encountered gradually, emerging from the landscape rather than dominating it.

The estate remains a working vineyard, cultivated according to organic and biodynamic principles. This continuity between agriculture and culture gives Château La Coste its distinctive character. It is neither museum nor winery, neither park nor gallery, but a landscape inhabited by ideas.

Few places in Europe bring together contemporary art, architecture and the Provençal environment with such clarity and ambition.
