Created by sisters Sylvie and Brigitte Demaizière, Moustique reinterprets the identity of Arles and the Camargue through ceramics, lighting, decorative objects and visual storytelling. Named after the mosquito that defines life in the wetlands, the shop offers a contemporary expression of regional culture rooted in landscape, biodiversity and local craft.

Moustique is one of the most original contemporary expressions of Camargue identity. Founded by sisters Sylvie and Brigitte Demaizière, the concept store was created around a simple idea: that the landscapes, traditions and ecology of the Camargue deserve to be translated into objects rather than merely remembered through postcards and clichés.

Its name immediately signals this intention. The mosquito is among the most familiar inhabitants of the Camargue, often regarded as a nuisance by visitors yet essential to the ecological balance of the wetlands. Rather than avoiding this symbol, the founders embraced it, transforming it into the emblem of a shop whose philosophy celebrates biodiversity, local character and the realities of place.

The products follow the same logic. Lamps, ceramics, tableware, jewellery and decorative objects draw inspiration from the materials, wildlife and visual culture of Arles and the surrounding marshlands. Many pieces are produced in small quantities or created specifically for the store, giving Moustique a distinctive identity that avoids the generic Provençal imagery found elsewhere.

What makes the project noteworthy is its coherence. The objects, the storytelling and even the name all emerge from the same source: the Camargue itself. The result is a shop that functions as a contemporary interpretation of regional culture, using design to communicate the character of a landscape.

For NOTES, Moustique represents the kind of independent creative project that helps define a destination today. It demonstrates how local identity can be transformed into something modern without losing its roots.
