The Getty Center

Los Angeles is often described as a city without a centre — expansive, fragmented and spread across a vast landscape. The Getty Center offers a compelling counterpoint. Rising above the city on a ridge in the Santa Monica Mountains, it was conceived as a place where art, architecture, landscape and scholarship could exist within a single environment.

Designed by Richard Meier, the campus is clad in more than a million square feet of Italian travertine, a material chosen for its warmth, texture and enduring quality. The architecture unfolds through terraces, courtyards and pavilions, carefully positioned to frame views of the city, the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding mountains. Arrival itself is part of the experience, with visitors reaching the site via a dedicated tram that ascends the hillside from the parking area below.

The museum's collections focus on European paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, manuscripts and photography. Yet the Getty's significance extends beyond what is displayed in its galleries. The campus also houses the Getty Research Institute and Getty Conservation Institute, reflecting a broader commitment to preservation, scholarship and public access.

At the centre of the site lies Robert Irwin's Central Garden, a living artwork that evolves throughout the seasons. Neither formal garden nor sculpture, it reinforces the Getty's belief that landscape deserves the same attention as architecture and art.

What distinguishes The Getty Center is this integration of disciplines. It functions simultaneously as museum, research institution, architectural landmark and public landscape. Few cultural sites in the United States achieve such a complete synthesis.
