Few design destinations in Los Angeles possess a point of view as immediately recognisable as Blackman Cruz. Since its founding in 1993, the gallery has operated outside the conventions that often define the antiques trade. Rather than organising objects according to period, geography or academic classification, founders Adam Blackman and David Cruz built their reputation on intuition, juxtaposition and an instinct for the unexpected.

Their approach emerged from Southern California’s broader culture of reinvention. Hollywood has long blurred the boundaries between decoration, collecting, performance and fantasy, and Blackman Cruz reflects that tradition more clearly than most design galleries in the city. Antique furniture sits beside contemporary pieces, unusual artefacts and original commissions, creating interiors that feel assembled through curiosity rather than adherence to a single style.

The gallery’s move in 2007 to a former Hollywood nightclub on North Highland Avenue reinforced that identity. The building’s scale allowed Blackman Cruz to expand beyond dealing and curation into original production through Blackman Cruz Workshop, creating furniture and objects manufactured in limited quantities in Los Angeles. In doing so, the gallery became both a collector of design culture and a contributor to it.

NOTES includes Blackman Cruz because it represents a distinctly Los Angeles way of seeing. More than a showroom, it is an evolving cabinet of curiosities shaped by three decades of disciplined collecting, creative risk-taking and unwavering editorial vision.
