The Madrona Hotel

The Madrona offers a different reading of Sonoma County hospitality. Rather than adopting the Tuscan or Provençal vocabulary often associated with California wine country, the estate is rooted in a distinctly nineteenth-century Northern California story: mining wealth, Victorian architecture, gardened hillside living and the gradual transformation of Healdsburg into a cultural centre of wine country.

Built in 1881 for John Alexander Paxton, a San Francisco financier, the mansion formed part of the former Madrona Knoll Rancho and remains one of the region's rare historic estate houses. The property, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, includes the mansion, carriage house and surrounding grounds, preserving a layered record of domestic life in Sonoma before the area became internationally associated with wine tourism.

After operating for decades as Madrona Manor, the estate was reimagined and reopened in 2022 as The Madrona. Designer Jay Jeffers led the restoration, retaining historic architectural details, period furnishings and the character of the original house while introducing a contemporary art collection and a more personal, residential approach to hospitality. The official hotel describes the property today as an eight-acre estate with gardens, panoramic valley views and a historic mansion setting.
