Heath Ceramics

Few makers are as closely associated with California design as Heath Ceramics.

The company was founded in 1948 by Edith Heath, whose approach to ceramics rejected decoration in favour of form, material and everyday usefulness. At a time when much American tableware remained formal and ornamental, Heath developed a distinctly Californian aesthetic: restrained shapes, natural colours and objects designed to be used daily rather than displayed. The company’s dinnerware quickly found an audience among architects, designers and modernist households, becoming part of the visual language of postwar California.

What distinguishes Heath is not simply longevity but continuity. Unlike many design brands that gradually outsourced production, Heath continues to manufacture in California, maintaining direct control over both process and material. The company’s expansion into architectural tile during the 1950s further strengthened its relationship with architecture and design, leading to commissions for museums, public buildings and private residences across the United States.

The Mission District location reflects that philosophy particularly well. Part showroom, part factory and part workshop, it allows visitors to see production alongside finished objects. Ceramic tile is still made on site, while the Clay Studio offers demonstrations and educational programs that connect the finished product back to the process of making it.
