Wine, Art & Terroir at Castello di Ama
Località Ama in Chianti, 53013 Gaiole in Chianti SI, Italy
Set within the small hamlet of Ama in Chianti Classico, this guided experience combines wine, contemporary art and landscape into a single narrative. Visitors explore vineyards, cellars and site-specific installations before concluding with a seated tasting that reveals how Castello di Ama's wines express the territory around them.
What distinguishes Castello di Ama is that wine is never presented in isolation. The estate treats architecture, contemporary art, agriculture and hospitality as interconnected parts of a single cultural landscape, allowing visitors to understand the territory before tasting the wines that emerge from it.
Visits begin at the Arca, the estate's contemporary welcome pavilion overlooking the vineyards. From there, guests are guided through the hamlet of Ama itself, a remarkably preserved settlement whose stone buildings, vineyards and olive groves form the physical heart of the estate. Along the route, visitors encounter works from Castello di Ama's celebrated collection of site-specific contemporary art, commissioned from internationally recognised artists and installed throughout historic buildings, gardens and production spaces.
The experience continues through the estate's cellars and winemaking facilities, where guides introduce the relationship between vineyard, soil and wine within the context of Chianti Classico. Rather than separating art from agriculture, Castello di Ama presents both as expressions of the same landscape, creating a broader understanding of place before the tasting begins.
The experience concludes in Villa Pianigiani, where guided tastings explore the wines for which Castello di Ama has become internationally recognised. Single-vineyard expressions such as Bellavista, La Casuccia and L'Apparita are presented not simply as wines, but as interpretations of specific sites within the surrounding hills.
For NOTES, Wine, Art & Terroir at Castello di Ama matters because it demonstrates a richer understanding of wine culture. Rather than focusing solely on tasting, the experience uses landscape, architecture and contemporary art to explain why these wines exist in the form they do, creating one of Tuscany's most thoughtful encounters with terroir.
