Long before Montecito became synonymous with privacy and understated wealth, San Ysidro Ranch had already established itself as one of California's great places of retreat. Set across 550 acres beneath the Santa Ynez Mountains, the property combines the atmosphere of a historic country estate with a horticultural landscape of olive trees, citrus groves, lavender and gardens. For more than 130 years, guests have come here seeking the same thing: refuge.
Some hotels are destinations. San Ysidro Ranch is an escape.
Established as a guest ranch in 1893, the property occupies land first associated with the Franciscan settlement of Santa Barbara and later developed as one of California's most productive citrus ranches. The original sandstone packing house built in 1889 still survives as The Stonehouse restaurant, anchoring the property's sense of continuity with its agricultural past.
The ranch entered a new chapter in 1935 when actor Ronald Colman and hotelier Alvin Weingand acquired the estate. Together they transformed it into one of California's most desirable private retreats. Over the following decades, writers, actors, political figures and international visitors came not to be seen, but to disappear. Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier married here. John and Jacqueline Kennedy spent their honeymoon in what is still known as Kennedy Cottage. John Huston completed the screenplay for The African Queen during an extended stay. Winston Churchill visited before them all.
Yet unlike many historic properties, San Ysidro Ranch has never become a monument to its past. The atmosphere remains remarkably intimate. Thirty-eight cottages are dispersed throughout the landscape rather than gathered around a central hotel building. Paths wind through lavender, rosemary, citrus and mature gardens. Ancient olive trees line the entrance. Private patios, outdoor fireplaces and secluded terraces reinforce the sense that guests are inhabiting a country estate rather than staying in a resort.
The current property reflects an extensive restoration undertaken after Ty Warner acquired the ranch in 2000. Architect Marc Appleton preserved the property's historic character while ensuring that every cottage retained a unique identity.
