Auberge Du Soleil

Few properties have shaped Napa Valley as profoundly as Auberge du Soleil.

Today it is easy to take Napa Valley's luxury resorts, vineyard views and destination dining for granted. In 1981, however, much of that identity had yet to be formed. Claude Rouas arrived from France convinced that California wine country deserved a style of hospitality equal to its landscape. What he created on a hillside above Rutherford would become one of the defining properties of modern Napa Valley.

Rouas did not simply open a restaurant. He imported an idea. Inspired by Provence, he imagined a place where food, wine, landscape and architecture would form a single experience. Guests would linger over long lunches, dine outdoors beneath olive trees and view hospitality as a way of life rather than a service. The name he chose — Auberge du Soleil, the Inn of the Sun — reflected both the spirit of southern France and the light of Northern California.

The restaurant became an immediate success and led to the construction of a hotel five years later. That expansion established what would become the founding property of the Auberge Resorts Collection, now one of the most respected luxury hospitality groups in the world.

The estate remains remarkably faithful to its original vision. Guest accommodations are dispersed across a terraced hillside planted with olive trees and native oaks. Private cottages, courtyards, gardens and outdoor terraces create a sense of immersion in the landscape rather than separation from it. The atmosphere feels distinctly Californian, yet traces of Provence remain everywhere: in the architecture, the olive groves, the rhythm of outdoor living and the central importance of the table.

The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil has held a Michelin star continuously since 2007. The resort has earned Michelin Three Keys, Forbes Five-Star status and membership in Relais & Châteaux. Yet these distinctions feel secondary to its larger contribution. Auberge du Soleil helped establish the image of Napa Valley that millions of visitors now recognise: a place where exceptional wine, thoughtful food and beautiful landscapes come together effortlessly.

Claude Rouas remained associated with the property throughout his life and witnessed Napa Valley evolve into one of the world's leading wine destinations. His original vision remains visible throughout the estate.
