LUMA Arles

LUMA Arles occupies a former railway repair complex on the edge of Arles, a city already distinguished by its Roman heritage, artistic history and long association with the Rencontres d'Arles photography festival. Rather than preserving the site as an industrial relic, the project reimagined it as a place for contemporary culture, experimentation and public engagement.

The initiative was led by Maja Hoffmann, whose connection to Arles and the Camargue extends back to childhood. Her vision was not simply to create another museum, but to establish a cultural ecosystem where artists, architects, researchers, designers and environmental thinkers could work alongside one another.

At the centre of the campus stands Frank Gehry's Tower, a landmark structure whose stainless-steel surfaces have become a defining feature of the Arles skyline. Surrounding it are renovated industrial buildings, exhibition spaces, artist residencies, research laboratories, gardens and public areas that together form a cultural district rather than a single institution.

What distinguishes LUMA is the breadth of its ambition. Contemporary art remains central, but the programme extends into design, ecology, materials research, architecture and social innovation. The landscape itself plays an important role, with gardens and outdoor spaces designed to reflect the flora and environmental conditions of Provence and the Camargue.

LUMA Arles demonstrates how cultural investment can transform a historic site without erasing its past. It is simultaneously rooted in Arles and international in outlook, making it one of the most influential cultural projects in Europe today.
