La Bastide de Gordes
61 Rue de la Combe, 84220 Gordes, France
Built into the hillside at the heart of Gordes, La Bastide de Gordes occupies a position few hotels can claim. Part historic residence, part village landmark, it overlooks the Luberon from a series of terraces suspended above one of Provence's most celebrated landscapes.
Notes Review
Gordes has long been one of the defining villages of Provence. Rising from the limestone slopes of the Luberon, its narrow streets, stone houses and commanding position have attracted artists, writers and travellers for generations. La Bastide de Gordes is woven directly into this setting.
The property occupies a former seigneurial residence dating to the 16th century, built within the village ramparts and shaped by the geography of the hillside itself. Rather than standing apart from Gordes, it forms part of the village fabric, opening onto terraces that look across the valley below.
The building also occupies a place within the cultural history of the region. During the twentieth century, Victor Vasarely spent time here, part of a wider artistic community that helped establish Gordes as a destination for painters and creative figures drawn to the light and landscape of Provence.
In 2015, the property underwent an extensive restoration led by the Airelles group and involving more than 150 artisans. The work sought to preserve the character of the building while restoring its historic atmosphere through traditional materials, antiques and regional craftsmanship.
What distinguishes La Bastide de Gordes is not simply its view, remarkable as it is, but its relationship with the village itself. Few places offer such a direct connection between architecture, landscape and the cultural identity of Provence.
